Designing a 7-year-old girl’s bedroom
When a past client (see Ocean Twp, NJ Bathroom) called to design another room in her house, to say I was excited is an understatement. Back in 2022, we redesigned her daughter Bliss’s bathroom and made it playful, fun and functional. Up next on the list was Bliss’s bedroom which I could not wait to get my hands on!
In our initial meeting, we discussed items that they wanted to keep in the room that they already had. This included the bed, which was converted from her crib, the dresser, and a small couch, all from Pottery Barn. The dresser had some damage on the top, so we decided to use a peel and stick wallpaper in a pretty floral pattern to cover up any imperfections and added butterfly knobs to make it a little more special.

We also went through the list of tasks we would need to coordinate outside contractors for. One of these items was the carpeting. My client wants to eventually put in hardwood floors throughout the second floor, but not for some time. We decided just to redo the carpet in Bliss’s room for now, and down the road we will replace it with wood flooring. After our meeting, I stopped by Carpet Depot in Ocean Twp, NJ to see what type of remnants they had available for the room. Using a remnant made the project more affordable as we did not want to spend too much, given we plan on replacing it in the next couple of years. I chose 3 options for the carpet, and my client ended up going with my favorite. Love when that happens!

We had not planned on having the room painted at first, as Bliss and her mom were happy with the color. However, when the new carpet was installed looking so fresh, we decided to have the room painted (using the same color) and it looked so crisp afterwards. The colors used were BM Portland Gray, which is a grayish lavender, in eggshell for the walls and BM Chantilly Lace for the trim.

As part of the design process, we also discussed Bliss’s favorite things. Something that came up was her love for dress up and Disney princesses. For a while, every time I saw her, she was dressed like a different princess. I had the idea to create a gallery wall with some of her outgrown dresses as a focal point, which both mom and daughter embraces whole-heartedly. We also added some fun art framed in white and gold for a little extra flair.

Something very important to Bliss’s mom was to give Bliss her own space to relax, unwind, and read after her day at school. To achieve this, we used a canopy to create a reading nook. It is made of pink tulle and we had it customized by my aunt from Wendy' Joy’s Treasures with colorful pom pom trim. She also helped customize the curtains in the room and tie them in to the canopy. Now, Bliss can give herself some privacy with the canopy when she needs some alone time, or rest on the little couch.

I absolutely loved working on this project, and can’t wait to work on the next room in this home.
